Transmitter and receiver Photo-ICs are used in fibre sensing applications, which are based on the response of the fibre and therefore the optical response of the transmitted light to external influences, such as mechanical deformation or other physical values.

The optical response in fibre sensing is a measurable change in the amount, or the modulation (phase, polarization, amplitude, signal shape) of the transmitted light.

In cars, fibre sensing is for example used for pedestrian protection in the case of an actual accident. The fibre, which is integrated in the front of the car, detects the specific mechanical force of a pedestrian coming into contact with the bumper or hood. By slightly lifting up the end of the hood, the impact of the collision can be essentially reduced for a pedestrian. Such advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are gaining increased significance, especially since the EU set the goal to reach zero traffic fatalities and, as functions for pedestrian protection have also now been added to the tests for the NCAP 5 star rating.

The transmitter is an LED with a wavelength depending on the type of fibre, as different fibre types have their minimum loss at different wavelengths. The typical plastic optical fibre (POF) uses, for example, light with a wavelength of 650nm. The receiver is a photodiode or Photo-IC suitable for the applied wavelength. In the case of a POF, the suitable semiconductor material for the sensor is Silicon. Our transmitters and receivers for fibre sensing are available with analog output, or including ICs for digital signal processing and are available in a variety of package types, with or without fibre connector.
