Ambient Light Sensors are used in dimming mirrors for rear and side view, to support the dimming of the mirror when the headlights of an approaching vehicle are blinding the driver of the preceding car.

Two Ambient Light Sensors measure the brightness in the front and the back of the car and these analog or digital outputs are compared by the ASIC on the PC-board of the dimming mirror. If the brightness value from the back reaches a certain limit, in comparison to the front value, the system gives the signal to gradually dim the mirror.

Ambient Light Sensors are usually Silicon Photo ICs, which have excellent linearity and a large dynamic range with 5 orders of magnitude, in order to detect low light levels in the dark, as well as bright daylight. The levels of illuminance to be measured for anti-glare mirrors is between the millilux and kilolux range. Special filters are used to achieve sensitivity close to the human eye.

Our Ambient Light Sensors are available in a variety of package types, for example the Chip on Board (COB) package, with only 2 x 1.25 mm size and also offers high reliability and robustness.
